KING ARTHUR

King Arthur is an important figure in the mythology of Great Britain, where he appears as a great role model of kingship both in war and peace. He is the main character in the legends known as ‘MATTER OF BRITAIN’. He was said to have been born in the 5th century. There is disagreement about whether Arthur, ever actually existed, or whether he is a mythic figure. But real or not Arthur became a great king and took part in many adventures along with his Knights of the Round Table.

EXCALIBUR

Excalibur is the mythical sword of King Arthur, sometimes said to have magical powers or associated with the rightful sovereignty of Great Britain.
Many of the legends of King Arthur start with the story in which Excalibur can only be removed from a large stone by Arthur, then a young boy. The legend said that whoever could draw to sword from the stone would one day become the rightful king of England.

At the end of the story of King Arthur as Arthur lies dying, he tells Sir Bedivere (one of the Knights of the Round Table) to return the sword to its rightfull owner by throwing it into a lake near by. Sir Bedivere thinks the sword too precious to throw away, so twice only pretends to do so. Each time, Arthur asks him to describe what he saw. When Bedivere tells him the sword simply vanished underwater, Arthur scolds him harshly. Finally, Sir Bedivere throws Excalibur into the lake. Before the sword strikes the water's surface, a hand reaches up to grasp it and pull it under. When Sir Bedivere return to the king he sees Arthur leaving on a large ship heading to the island of Avalon, a mythical island where it is said that Arthur is resting and from where, as his legend says, he will one day return, to save Britain from a great threat.
